The Division of Climate and Environmental Physics, Physics Institute, University of Bern opens a position for a PhD: Tree ring isotope record

Job Specification

The tree ring archive yield calendar dated information about climate variations through measurements of tree ring width, density and isotope compositions of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. The goal of the opened PhD position is to complement the Alpine Holocene chronology that has been established over the last four years. Short- and long-term variations of the tree ring isotope series will be analysed and compared to already existing Holocene records.
This includes the following tasks:

  •  Cellulose extraction and homogenization
  •  Complement multi-millennial long Alpine stable isotope (C, O and H) records
  •  Comparison with ring-width and ring-density records
  •  Comparison of short- and long-term variations in tree-ring isotope records with other Holocene climate records

Job Profile

  • Diploma or Master degree in physics, chemistry, geology or environmental sciences
  • Strong demonstrated skills in experimental work
  • Experience in handling vacuum systems and complex measurement devices is an advantage
  • Fluency in German and English (written and spoken)
  • Strong motivation and ability to carry out research in an interdisciplinary environment
