Fascination of Plants Day 2024
Fascination of Plants Day (FoPD) is back! It takes place this year on May 18th, 2024. FoPD events can be held from 1 March to 30 November 2024.
The seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” will be delivered by plant scientists and plant enthusiasts across the world and coordinated by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).
Why is Fascination of Plants Day so important?
The goal of this campaign is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. Plants are the silent architects of our world. They possess an awe-inspiring ability to conjure sustenance from mere sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water, crafting sugars as if by magic. This alchemy has empowered plants to not only survive but flourish in virtually every corner of our planet, adapting to an astonishing array of environments, from the harshest deserts to the deepest jungles.
With an estimated 250,000 species, plants stand as a testament to nature’s boundless creativity, each species a masterpiece of evolution, finely tuned to its ecological niche. Yet, their significance transcends mere biodiversity; plants are the true stewards of life on Earth, serving as the primary producers of biomass and the foundation upon which entire ecosystems thrive.
The wonders of plants extend far beyond their role as providers of sustenance. They are the pharmacists of the natural world, gifting us with medicines that heal and cure. They are the weavers of fibres, clothing us in textiles that shelter and comfort. They are the alchemists of chemistry, synthesizing compounds that fuel our industries and enrich our lives. Plants are the purifiers of air, scrubbing pollutants from the atmosphere and replenishing it with oxygen for us to breathe and helping us to combat climate change.

We invite everyone, from schools to producers, to join in and contribute to this initiative. Many plant science institutions, universities, schools, botanical gardens and museums, together with farmers and industry, have opened their doors during the Fascination of Plants Day in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022. We also invite the media, scientists and policy makers to discuss the latest state-of-the-art research and breakthroughs in plant science and explore new applications plant science can offer. Fascination of Plants Day takes place in the form of a range of events in public spaces, botanical gardens, arboretums, theatres, cafes, central city squares and parks designed to make everyone grasp the importance of plants.
We invite YOU to organize an attractive, plant related activity and to interact with the public. Events can be organized throughout the whole month of May. Our goal is to record over 800 events.
